“My voice isn’t good enough!”
“If I don’t sound like Beyoncé, I might as well not even bother singing!”
“I’m not good enough to be a real singer”
“I don’t feel safe letting other people hear me sing!”

These are the harsh words I hear on a daily basis – not just from my clients, but I too have fallen into this trap of self deprecation. It’s easy to be your own worst critic. Sometimes it just starts as a gentle push to make us “better,” but it always results in delayed progress and unhappiness, because we are born to appreciate who we are. It’s unnatural for us to hate ourselves. One thing I’m still learning and committing to daily as an artist, is 100% self acceptance. It’s a worthwhile commitment because your voice will never function the way you want it to without your true appreciation and acceptance of it. Learning to hold this space for yourself will not only change your voice, it will change your life.

I think we all know why it’s so hard. It’s part of our cultural conditioning. Our institutions, well-meaning families, and friends tricked us into thinking we were simply not good enough, and we had to prove our value in order to be accepted. So…we bought into it. Being called out for our imperfections as helpless, innocent children with no tools was such an unpleasant experience, that as adults we spend most of our lives trying to protect ourselves from the reoccurrence of that awful feeling. Ironically, we learn to re-create that within ourselves without the help of anyone else. It takes awareness, patience and daily devotion to rewire the negative programming from our nervous system and make freedom our natural default.

In the video above, I do an exercise from a part of myself that took me a while to CONNECT with. It’s the unconditionally loving version of me that knows who I am, and accepts me regardless. By using CORE Vocal Power®, you can create this connection with yourself. Watch the video, while I provide tools that you can use to create an empowered voice.  You will see, the singing isn’t perfect, and I’m happy to say, I don’t even care!
Do the exercise and send me your video!

Tips:

  • Every day, read Dot’s Peaceful Agreement #1 (I allow myself, to be who I am now) or a modified version that works for you.
  • On a daily basis, CONNECT, get PRESENT and make peace with what is.
  • On a daily basis, find a way to be OBJECTIVE and OBSERVE yourself without judging.
  • On a daily basis, notice and appreciate the uniqueness that you bring. Your RESONANCE is your unique frequency. That includes the sound of your voice. Find ways to lovingly appreciate it. There is no other voice like it.

You are a ray of light and beacon of hope and inspiration, Dot! I love the ‘example’ you share in this vlog of your thought processes as well as the exercise you suggest for managing those thoughts that you so beautifully share. I think you sound amazing! Hearing your voice as well as the thoughts going through your head, reflects my own experience of how I consider my voice (critically) despite the great support and acknowledgement received when offering it in performance. I am taking this to heart…and voice! Thank you for sharing this and for all the great work you do!
